Not realizing how deep the words really cut

I wouldn’t mind so much, if he weren’t so
Conscious of nothing but the rain
Echoing the emptiness he feels

He’s content to remain behind the scenes
Eclipsed by the glitter of others
He has his own brand of light: sunlight on steel
